This CNPON sponsored workshop is the fourth in a series of four organizational capacity building sessions for senior organizational leaders.

Session Four, The Value of Fund Development, explores global best practices regarding Fund Development. Participants will gain an understanding of how critical good Fund Development is for building their non-profit organizations. In addition, this workshop will share key principles and processes of Fund Development that need to be applied by all non-profit organizations.
Workshop participants will engage in lively discussions of how to apply key learning from previous workshops with Fund Development processes and principles. Participants will collectively learn and share how to apply and communicate these Fund Development principles within the realities of China's current non-profit organizational environment. One of the key objectives of the workshop is for leaders to leave with a clearer understanding of key fund development ¡°tools¡± to ensure healthy and successful organizational growth. A combination of lecture, large and small group discussion, simulation exercises, and case studies help the participants apply what they learn to their own situations in a practical way.¡¡
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
In this workshop participants will:
¡¡¡¡ Develop and discuss global best practices regarding Fund Development and how these practices may/may not effect Chinese non-profit organizations (NPOs).
¡¡¡¡ Gain in-depth understanding on the importance of Fund Development to an organization's reputation and organizational health and effectiveness
¡¡¡¡ Define the relationship between standards and Fund Development and understand why both are necessary for NPO effectiveness
¡¡¡¡ Deepen one's understanding of key Fund Development definitions, terminology, and processes.
¡¡¡¡ Gain clarity on the mindset of the donor-investor when it comes to grant-making¡¡
¡¡¡¡ Ensure an understanding on the importance of accountability when it comes to securing grants.
¡¡¡¡ Explore effective Fund Development ¡°tools¡± for NPO leaders, for example, writing solid proposals, researching/prospecting, face-to-face communication with donors, etc.
¡¡¡¡ Discuss various barriers that hinder Fund Development
¡¡¡¡ Establish desired outcomes and action plans for their NPO in regards to good Fund Development

Pat is the author of Hiring Excellence ¨C Six Steps to Making Good People Decisions. His most recent book, The Performance Factor (2001), helps readers unlock the secrets of high performance teamwork.
A Seattle native, he holds an MBA and BA from the University of Washington, serves on the Board of Directors for the UNUM/Provident, MetoKote Corporation, Pliant Corporation, and several foundations and non-profit organizations.

David Thiel brings nearly two decades of experience working with both large and small manufacturing and service companies. An accomplished marketing strategist, he has successfully championed the repositioning efforts of a major
billion retailer, while his brand marketing skills have enabled him to help companies achieve organizational growth and change in competitive global markets.
Before joining Team Resources, he was Vice President of Marketing and Vice President of Business Development for a privately held bakery manufacturer where he initiated major strategic alliances and new product launches. He participated in leading and coaching multi-functional teams in successfully marketing and selling ¡°breakthrough¡± dessert products into the foodservice and grocery channels.
In addition, David has served as Corporate Director of Marketing for Pilgrim's Pride, a Fortune 500 food processor in Texas.¡¡He was responsible for establishing and communicating the marketing strategy for its retail and foodservice markets.
David currently resides in Atlanta, Georgia.

PAUL EDWARDS
Paul Edwards, of Paul Edwards Consulting, provides marketing, fundraising training, and strategic counsel to selected for-profit and non-profit clients.¡¡He is regarded as one of the nation's most effective and motivating trainers of staff and boards.
His highly acclaimed seminars have provided staff and leadership of more than 75 organizations with skills and techniques of large gift solicitation and other specialized skills.
Currently, he works with such clients as the Institute for Charitable Giving, Overseas Council International, The Maclellan Foundation, Union Rescue Mission, North Shore Medical Center, Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos Intl., Yale University, and the San Francisco Ballet Association.
Mr. Edwards began his successful career in the field as a member of the Office of Development of Stanford University.¡¡At Stanford, he was instrumental in designing and implementing all aspects of development, from annual gifts to campaigns in both university and medical center environments, including the 5-year .2 billion Centennial Campaign.
Mr. Edwards then joined the Russ Reid Company of Pasadena, California in 1988, as Development Counsel. In this capacity, he provided major gifts training and campaign counsel for such organizations as the American Red Cross, American Heart Association, Children's Hospital of Chicago, Oxford University, University of British Columbia, Princeton University, and the Smithsonian.
In 1991, he was named Senior Vice President of Prison Fellowship, where he ran a successful million major gifts campaign; following this position, he became s Vice President of Promise Keepers, directing the public relations, development, and marketing initiative for ¡°Stand in the Gap,¡± an event attended by 1.3 million men¡ªthe largest gathering of its kind in US history.
His for-profit experience includes three years as Vice President for New Business Development for Reebok Fitness, a subsidiary of Reebok International. He also served three years as CEO for Hawaiian Island Ministries, an organization committed to strengthening churches and pastors in Hawaii and the Pacific Rim.
He earned a B.A. degree in Economics from Stanford University.
An accomplished singer and actor, Mr. Edwards has performed in over 40 theatrical productions.
He is married and the father of three children. |
